Getting the Rotary Club Started |
| Charter President Karl Fuhre Sr. |
|---|
 | | The first letter I received from the Collingwood Rotary Club, Rotarian J. Cockerill, was July 14, 1983, asking if I would be interested in starting a Rotary Club in Wasaga Beach. On October 21, 1983 the Collingwood Rotary President, Dave Christie, agreed to support the proposal of the extension of a Rotary Club in to Wasaga Beach and area. At the first meeting it was an unanimous decision from all members. Karl Fuhre Sr., a Charter Member of the Collingwood Rotary Club, was willing to spearhead this very worthwhile project. The time and place chosen for the weekly meetings was Monday at 12:15 pm at the Waldhorn Hotel, Wasaga Beach. |

April 7, 1984: Charter Night |
From July 1983 to April 7, 1984 Charter Night, we had informal meetings. J. Cockerill and members of the Collingwood Rotary Club were present and lent their support. |
Twenty-two men started the Club. |
At the end of February 1984 a meeting was held, at which it was moved, by Karl Fuhre Sr. that the Charter Night would be held April 7, 1984. Twenty-two men were banded together in this new crusade for Service Above Self, and to whom must be ascribed the honor of starting the Club on it's career of notable achievement. |

Karl Fuhre Sr.: The Father of our Rotary Club |
Karl, as Charter President, has always been considered the Father of the Rotary Club in Wasaga Beach, and has, since the club's inception, been interested in his welfare. Karl, a Charter Member of the Collingwood Club, has been a very active Member and his advice has often been sought. |
Successful track record: |
Our Club has been most successful in maturing gracefully over the last 18 years and at the same time constantly renewing itself by the addition of young Members. This, I believe, is vital. |
The Charter Night: |
Perhaps no single meeting in the entire history of the Club has meant more than that of the Charter Night. Two hundred and twenty Rotarians from seventeen Ontario towns and cities attended the Charter Night in the Oxbow Community Centre in Wasaga Beach. |
At the guest table were seated President Karl Fuhre, District Governors Erick Nieman and Dave Christie, President of the Collingwood Rotary Club Gerry Cockerill, the Mayor Walter Borthwick, and the MPP George McCague. Mayor Walter Borthwick, a member of the Club, extended a civic welcome to the visitors and added his personal congratulations on the formation of the new Rotary Club. Next in order came the reading of greetings from numerous clubs. |
At the time, after eighteen years, only three of the original members are still Rotarians with the Wasaga Club: Walter Borthwick, Bob Gibson and Karl Fuhre Sr. The Wasaga Beach Rotary Club nominated it's first Paul Harris Fellow in 1987. Since that time to present eight awards have been made. First on the list was our Charter President Karl Fuhre Sr., who received his Paul Harris Fellowship in 1987. |
