Dec 16, 2004 - Hey, We Had A New Santa...
Santa Claus, President Martin & Elf Mary (left)
Santa Claus in Wasaga Beach
Santa Claus was in town, but guess what: Nobody could tell us what happened to the old Santa, but this one wasn't a new kid on the block either: With his appearance, freshly shaved and groomed, he looked more like a career politician rather than the real Santa. Well, the first impression was not right: His forceful "Ho Ho Hos" echoed from the Beacon walls, and indeed he brought nice gifts and poems for the Rotarians and their spouses.
What a Christmas Dinner!
President Martin Jurgeit, wife Scarlette, President Elect Henning Geiler, wife Sabine.
Only Guy and Angie Puccini's excellent Christmas dinner made the wait for Santa bearable. Finally, when Santa entered the room everybody stared at him in awe. It felt like you had seen him around before but one couldn't be quite sure. This Santa looked kind of weird, with no beard and no red robe... Was it the Grinch? He wasn't green however, and one thing was for sure: This fellow didn't steal Christmas, he brought it to Wasaga Beach.
Elf Mary and her busy aide Pat
Hosts Guy and Angie Puccini (The Beacon Restaurant), Faramarz Sajed and his cousin.
As usual Santa Claus had several aides in tow. Again this year, Elf Mary Watson read out all the poems that had been mailed to the North Pole post office during the course of the summer. Santa also brought bags full of gifts for the Rotarians who all had been exceptionally well behaved in 2004 (That is said with Santa's accord). Elf-Aide Pat Baty disappeared under the beautiful Christmas tree matching packages with name tags.
A Successful 2004
Jacqueline Wallace, Marilyn Ruttan, Steve Wallace & Ron Puccini
2004 has been an exceptionally successful year for the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach & Area. Our two major fundraisers, the Corvette Lottery and the Rotary Gala Dinner, both have created record revenues. 2004 was the strongest fundraising year in the history of the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach & Area exceeding $60,000. The Club has pledged to support local community projects such as the RecPlex Community Centre in Wasaga Beach as well as worthy projects overseas such as Rotary International's Polio Eradication Program.
One was missed...
Honorary Presidents Karl Fuhre Sen., Bob Gibson, spouses Ruth and Elizabeth, Founding member Walter Borthwick and wife Elaine
We had a lot of fun that night, thanks to all the Rotarians that put a lot of effort into the poems and gifts. The crew of the Beacon Restaurant did a marvelous job, and so did Santa and his Elves. But there was one person we really missed: Without him it was only half the fun: Past President Bob Gruzuk had to stay home that night due to his illness. It was his 60th Birthday that day, and we know that Bob would have loved nothing more than being among his fellow Rotarians. Hope you'll get better very soon, Bob!
The Family of Rotary

The annual Christmas Bash is one of these events where you can really see and feel what the "Family of Rotary" is all about: At the end of the year, just before everybody retreats for a few relaxing and contemplative days, the members get together for a great traditional party, celebrating a sucessful and eventful year. Rotarians can be proud of what they are a small part of and of what they accomplish year by year.
Outlook On 2005
Ken & Jill Miller, Bruce & Barbara Young, Ernest Chang
2005 is Rotary's Centennial Year. It was exactly 100 years ago, in Chicago Illinois, that a business man called Paul Harris had the idea for a service club that should soon spread over all continents. It is fair to say that Rotary has helped shape the face of this earth. Rotarians were among the founding members of the United Nations. Rotarians from all over the World committed themselves to eradicate Polio, one of mankind largest private fundraising effort ever undertaken. Countless Rotarians in countless countries spend their spare time for their communities by raising funds for thousands and thousands of projects. The Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach is proudly looking forward to being a part of the Centennial Celebrations and pledges to continue with its efforts to help make the World a better place.
Update: Tsunami Strikes South Asian Shores
Jim Smith, Bonnie Cooper & Bonnie Smith, Norm Kew & Loretta Urban-Kew and Chick Cooper's strong shoulder.
Just ten days after this wonderful light-hearted Christmas Party, a few days after the previous words have been written, South Asia was hit by one of the largest natural catastrophe on record. This gruesome event has caused more than 150,000 casualties with millions more being left injured, displaced and without clean water, food, shelter and the chance for a prosperous future. The Tsunami will certainly change the way the Rotary Club of Wasaga Beach & Area looks at future projects. Efforts will be made to provide longterm aid to those hit worst by the big wave. Rotary will be still there helping when the international media attention has long shifted to other news. That's Rotary's strength.
